Dera Gazi Khan
Gazi Khan Baloch founded a city Dera Gazi Khan after his name near about 1710CE. At that time, Mohammad Yausuf Khatana was a famous dignitary in that area. He was educated man and friend of Baloch chief. Gazi khan Baloch appointed Mahmood Khatana (Son of Yausuf Khatana) as the administrator of Dera Gazi Khan. He proved himself as a one of the great administrator.
Mahmood Khatana with his Gurjar military personals crossed the river Indus and brought the whole area now comprising the districts of Mujjafargarh and Faislabad under his control. He constructed a fort at Dera Gazi Khan, still known by the name Gurjari Fort. He renovated Gujarat town in Mujjafargarh and Gojra town in Faislabad Districts. Under his patronage, the Baloch tribe spread in the southern district of Punjab and occupied vast land.
Mahmood Khatana was famous for his land reforms. He constructed many canals. The Canal Noor, Dhagana, and Mahmood Wah are famous canals. For his bravery, kindness, friendship, and good administration Mahmood Khatana still remembered by Baluchs with great love and respect.
Shah Ismail Safavi conquered Baluchistan Mahmood Khatana advised the Baluch of this area not to draw swords against such a formidable army and thus Dera Gazi Khan saved from destruction. They paid one fourth of its income to the Shah. Shah was highly impressed with the loyalty of Mahmood Khatana and entitled him as “NAWAB”.
After the death of Mahmood Khatana his nephew Barkhurdar Khatana assumed the title “NAWAB” but neither the Baluchs nor the son of deceased Nawab were in his favor. However, he ruled the territory for some years
Noor Ahmad Khatana became Nawab after some political crises and maintained peace in the area. Maharaja Ranjit Singh marched towards Bhawalpur but his attention diverted towards Dera Gazi Khan, which become a district of Ranjit Singh’s kingdom after a deadly fight against the Gurjar and Baluchs. Descendents of this Gurjar Nawab family now lives in Multan and Bhawalpur areas.
