Jaipur:Rajasthan Gurjar Mahasabha (RGM) on Monday strongly demanded the shift of the gurjar community from the OBC (other backward class) category to the schedule tribe (ST) category.
The delay in the decision by the central and the state government is narrowing down the interests and privileges of the community, yashveer singh, general secretary of the All India Gurjar Mahasabha, told a "mahapanchayat" (congregation) at statue circle here.
"We will not any more tolerate delay in this matter and intensify our agitation like the fast unto death which is continued for a week in jaipur," singh added.
Reminding the BJP government in Rajasthan for seeking the full cooperation and support from gurjar community in all previous elections inlcuding the... assembly polls in 2003, Singh said that after 19 months of its rule the state government has not recommended the central government for shifting of gurjar community from OBC to ST.
Atleast fifty gurjar leaders including two BJP MLAs Hargyan Singh and Atar Singh Bhardana, and five former congress MLAs addressed the rally. The two prominent gurjar leaders of BJP K L Gurjar, the panchayat raj minister, and N S gurjar were elusive from the mahapanchayat.
"Twenty-one people affiliated to RGM continued to their agitation cum fast unto death at the statue circle," general secretary of RGM, Mohan Lal said.
Thousands of gurjar pepole took part in the rally which began from Ramniwas Bagh and moved through the main streets of the pink city before convulging at the statue circle for meeting.
The public transportation was paralysed due to the rally.
