Nirbhay Gurjar shot dead
Etawah, Nov 7
Dreaded dacoit Nirbhay Gurjar was shot dead in an encounter with the Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh Police in the ravines of Etawah district on Monday evening , official sources said.
The encounter took place at village Sitapur under Ajitmal police station in Etawah district in UP on Monday evening.
A synonym of terror from Chambal ravines to the shores of Yamuna river, Gurjar carried an award of Rs 2.50 lakh on his head.
Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary Alok Sinha said here Nirbhay was gunned down in an encounter with the STF in the jungles of Sitapur village in Etawah district. Nirbhay had spread a reign of terror in the districts of central Uttar Pradesh and also those of neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.

Senior Superintendent of Police (STF) Akhil Kumar, who personally led the operation, said the encounter lasted for over one and half hour after which police recovered a body from the scene which was identified as that of Nirbhay by a local resident.
When Chronicle reporter spoke to the Etawah, SSP, Daljit Singh Chaudhary about the encounter, he heaved a sigh of relief and said " yes we had gunned down him. Now there was no terror," he added.
It is worth mentioning here that Etawah police were on lookout for Gurjar since several months. The SSP Daljit Singh Chaudhary said that we had weakened his network to a great extent and there were many encounters leading to death of his colleagues.
Due to alround vigilance from UP and MP police, he was on the run. In the past a terrified Gurjar had even offered to lay down the arms but the administration had refused his request. In the meantime, hide and seek game continued between Gurjar and police.
A team of Luknow IG and SSP of STF Akhil Kumar were after Nirbahay Gurjar. Akhil Kumar on Monday evening got information that Gurjar was hiding in the jungle of Sitapur village under Ajitmal police station. Soon the STF squad laid a siege of Nirbhay's den.
Police first called him to surrender but instead Gurjar and his colleagues opened fire and started running. The police then opened fire in exchange and after about one and half hour of the encounter, there was eerie silence.
The police then launched a search of the place. Dacoit Nirbhay Gurjar was found lying dead. His death was also confirmed by a few villagers present there.
The happiness of cops knew no bounds after his death. He was always in the news. He had become a headache not only for the MP Police but also UP Police for his frequent cases of murders, loots and kidnappings and was also known as keeper of women dacoits in his team.
The resident of village Gangadadpur under Aiana police station in Auraia district, Gurajar had 239 cases registered against him.
The SSP of STF Akhil Kumar said that the police had recovered a semi-automatic gun, a.303 rifle along with a large number of cartridges and others arms. He said that there would have been eight to ten dacoits with him during the encounter as firing shots were being heard from eight to ten points.
The police believe that some more dacoits have been injured in the encounter, he added. Armed police force in batches had been pressed into the jungles in search of the elusive dacoits and said that the Gurjar gang had been wiped out and this was a great success for the police.
Gurjar's Bhind criminal record
Gwalior, Nov 7 Nirbhay Gurjar was involved in about 28 cases of assault, loot, murder in the Bhind district alone in Madhya Pradesh. Four members of the gang had died in the encounter whereas 25 of his colleagues and harbourers had been sent behind the bars.
Giving information about the activity of the gang, DGP Sanajy Rana said that Etawah was the main centre of his criminal activity. The MP police had declared an award of Rs 50000 on the head of Nirbhay Gurjar.
